Born 9 January 1945 in South Melbourne, Victoria,
Graduated Burnley Horticultural College, Melbourne, Victoria, 1966.
Became the Seed Collector at Kings Park, Perth, WA.
In this role he travelled all over WA collecting plants.
In 1968, he moved to Canberra, ACT, to the Seed Section, Forest Research Institute. In this position he travelled all over Australia, and to Timor.
His next position was with the Seed Section, Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG) where he was appointed Technical Officer 1974. In this position he was also involved with the Australian Cultivar Registration Authority (ACRA) and its move from Melbourne to the Botanic Gardens in Canberra.
In 1979 he took a posting to Kathmandu, with the Nepal-Australia Forestry Project, to oversee the building of a national seed store, and help establish community nurseries.
On his return from Nepal he worked for the ACT Parks and Conservation Service, Canberra.
This position lead to a horticultural media career, especialy radio, with public speaking and leading garden tours around the world.
A Churchill Fellowship Awarded 1986, enabled him to travel to the UK, Holland and USA.
In the 1990s his connection with the ANBG was re-established as first 'Patron' of the newly established 'Friends of the ANBG'.
He retired in 2009, but continued travelling, often to places off-the-beaten-track, both in Australia and overseas.
In 1993, he was awarded an Order of Australia Medal (OAM) for 'services to urban horticulture'.
