Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Wallin, Kevin Cecil (c.1925 - 2019)He attended the Australian Forestry School (1948) under a Commonwealth Reconstruction Training Scheme scholarship.
On graduation joined the NSW Forestry Commission on 13 March 1950.
He worked in the
northern tablelands region for 2 years & then moved around as a relieving forester
before spending 12 months with Harry Luke in the fire control section at Sydney.
His
last stint with the Commission was at Macksville where he prepared a management
plan for Nambucca State Forest.
He married Betty Peadon who also worked for the NSW Forestry Commission and had four children & five grandchildren.
He resigned from the Commission on 26 Novemer 1956.
He then worked for various coal industry Associations till
1985. This work varied considerably over the years but involved relatively little
forestry. "Initially the provision of adequate timber supplies to a booming coal industry
was my main concern". Later (when better methods of roof support were introduced) he
switched to planning and environment work, particularly rehabilitation of open cut
coal mines.
He never undertook any post graduate studies nor received any honours or awards.
Retiring in 1985 he did some consulting to coal companies & sawmillers for a few
years.
He appears to have kept some cattle in the 1960s as he registered a 'stock brand' in 1968.
He was involved an an oyster farming lease with others at Port Stevens in the 1980s.
He and Betty were lucky enough to have quite a few trips overseas. Betty got to know
Japan & Ireland quite well. Japan because two grandchildren were born there and
lived there for years. Ireland because of her family history interests.
For many years (in partnership with his eldest son), he had an interest in
breeding beef cattle. He also have enjoyed fishing and boating in Port Stephens & the
Myall Lakes from his base at Pindimar.
He died on 16 March 2019 at Tomaree Community Hospital, Nelson Bay.
