Colin was born in Moonta, South Australia, on 6th September 1920; he died in Adelaide, SA, on 27 July 2009, aged 88.
He was the son of Hugh Bowen James and Ethel May, nee Clutterbuck.
He was educated at St Peters College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 1942.
Immediately after graduation he enlisted into the Army on 22 January 1943.
Colin, together with his wife Elizabeth, joined the Field Naturalists in 1955.
He was largely responsible for separating the then 'Field Naturalist' Section of the Royal Society of South Australia' from the RSSA and establishing it as a stand-alone society in 1958.
He was particularly interested in mammals and helped establish the FNSSA Mammal Club in 1966, thereafter holding several office-bearer positions.
He was also a prominent member of the Nature Conservation Society of SA and participated in several of their field-camp surveys of nature reserves.
In 1987 he was awarded the 'Peter Aitken Medal' for his services to mammalogy in South Australia.
