Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria |
Born on 17 August 1820 at Duderstadt, Hanover, Prussia; died on 14 Jan 1927, at Collinswood (Walkerville), South Australia.
He was one of the best-known men of
the city of Adelaide in his day.
Shortly after his arrival in Adelaide on the ship 'Hermann von Beckerath' from Bremen in 1847 he joined his brother Moritz Joseph (1807-1864) as a chemist and druggist in Rundle Street in central Adelaide.
(The extended Heuzenroeder family included several pharmacists and several of them migrated to South Australia).
Heinrich later became sole proprietor of the business, which he continued till about 1878.
He married Amalia Ritter on 22 Jul 1858.
On the five and a half month voyage of the 'Hermann von Beckerath' to Adelaide in 1847 was another young man, Ferdinand Müller, better known today as botanist Ferdinand von Mueller, and it was the two Heuzenroeder brothers who gave Mueller his first employment in Australia at their pharmacy in Rundle Street.
Heinrich's only plant collections in AVH seem to be on Kangaroo Island in 1849, presumably for Mueller, as the latter never collected on Kangaroo Island during his Adelaide years.
